Soy Wax vs Paraffin Wax

Soy Wax vs Paraffin Wax

It's no secret that we have chosen to use all natural soy wax in our handmade recycled wine bottle candles. But why? This is a question we hear a lot. Why do we choose to use soy wax over paraffin wax? And why should you, as a consumer, choose to buy soy candles instead of paraffin candles?

In this post I would like to point out the benefits of soy wax and how it trumps in quality and health benefits over paraffin wax.

PARAFFIN WAX

When you are shopping for candles in any store, if the candle is sold at a very low price, seems cheap, and doesn't specifically say that it's made with soy wax, chances are extremely high that it's made with paraffin wax. EW!

Why "EW!", you ask? Well allow we to quickly walk you through how paraffin wax is created:

It starts off as the black sludge at the bottom of oil barrels. This substance is the last possible petroleum by-product. That's right, gasoline AND asphalt have already been extracted  and this is what is left because it's "too toxic" to be used. Yikes! Because it's black, it has to be bleached to white using 100% bleach. (Household bleach is at 10%......) To turn this white sludge into block form, a carcinogenic chemical known as acrolyn is added. When acrolyn is burned, it can release toxins like benezene and toluene into your home. There are so many health issues linked to these two chemicals, I will spare you the details, but if interested, you can find them here.  Paraffin wax candles will also increase the CO2 levels in the atmosphere, yeah in your home! We already have to deal with outside pollution, why would you voluntarily pollute your air inside?

SOY WAX

Oh the wonderful renewable resource of Soy! Now, let me explain how soy wax is made:

Soy beans are grown. They are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. Oil is then extracted. This oil is hydrogenated to allow it to be solid at room temp. (Basically some of the fatty acids go from unsaturated to saturated allowing the soy bean oil to be solid.) Oh, and those left over beans? Animals love them and eat them right up. No waste!

Burning a soy wax candle will not create that petro-soot our paraffin wax enemy previously mentioned does. Because it's all natural, there are no toxins to be released when burning.

One last point, and then I'm off my soap box. I hear a lot, "I couldn't imagine spending more than $15 on a candle!" First of all, we are only looking out for your health by using all natural ingredients, that unfortunately cost more, but I'd rather you spend that extra buck on a safer candle than more money on medical bills due to side effects from inhaling toxins. And, second, soy wax is proven to last 50% longer than paraffin wax. Let's do the math: If your $15 toxic paraffin wax candle lasts 30hrs but our $30 clean burning soy candle (with beeswax) lasts 70hrs . . . who do you think is getting the better deal? (In price and health)
